Goodbye old kitchen!

Our chefs have been busy, but not in their usual way of prepping, cooking and recipe reading – no, last Sunday night was our last service until we re-open the hotel on 12 July and The Tasting Room on 23 July: find out more about our beauty sleep here.

Head chef, Margot Janse gamely let the chefs artistic visions fly through permanent marker this time, straight onto the tiled walls, as the entire kitchen is going to be redone, revamped and reinvigorated. Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be updating you with the various exciting changes that will be taking place, so as they say, stay tuned!

In the meantime, here are some of the cheffy scribbles.

Taste of summer

This season our executive chef, Margot Janse, is experimenting with gorgeous summer produce, including hibiscus flowers and marron (crayfish).  Expect the unexpected, and a proud procession of unusual and timeless African ingredients, such as baobab and buchu, which are given new life on the plate.

And the winner is …

We’ve finally decided who the winner of our tasty competition – motivated by Dr. von Paris’s fabulous con job – is.

It has been incredibly difficult to select a winner from all the excellent entries but, as is so often the case, it had to be done. There was simply no getting out of it.

So, without further ado, congratulations need to go to Mark Matthews who has – thanks to his excellent submission: Mr. and Mrs. Rookenloop – won dinner for two in The Tasting Room.

Well done Mark!

World Top 50 Announcement

This year has seen the Tasting Room place 31 overall (6 places higher than last year’s 37th place). In fact Margot was the only female chef to achieve a place in the 2010 World Top 50.

We’ve once again found ourselves in fine local company with La Colombe, another South African restaurant, appearing at number 12 in the top 50 rankings. They also clinched the title of 2010 Best Restaurant in Africa and the Middle East. Congratulations La Colombe!

This year marks six consecutive years in the S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants rankings and, for us, this is phenomenal and in many ways unbelievable. Every year global food and fine-dining standards improve exponentially and the competition, this year, was incredibly stiff. We consider it a huge honour to have once again been included. It is also fantastic that another South African restaurant has again – along with us – been recognized and it reinforces our belief that South Africa, as a food destination, continues to impress on the global culinary stage.

Le Quartier Français Packages – Book Now!

2010 certainly began with a bang. It’s hard to believe that we’re already in the third month of the year. The Christmas and New Year break are now a distant memory, the Soccer World Cup is around the corner and the end of Summer is rapidly approaching.

At Le Quartier Français we know that it’s been three long months since your last real break and we think it’s time you recharged your soul on a mini-break. Pick from our selection of fantastic packages (the stay for 4 pay for 3 is always popular) and book yourself and a loved one, or friend, in for a night or four.

We suggest checking out Franschhoek during the lesser-known months of April and May, it really is spectacular over this time. It’s not too hot, the wind is minimal and it’s far less frantic than during January and February. Plus restaurant bookings are far easier to come by!

To view the various Le Quartier Français packages please visit our website. To book call us on +27218762151. See you soon!

Launch of the new 5-Series Gran Turismo at Le Quartier Français

The launch of the 5-Series Gran Turismo is being held, at the moment, at Le Quartier Français.

The South African journalists attending this launch enjoy a specially designed Tasting Room lunch (even more unique because the Tasting Room is traditionally only open in the evening).

This is a driving event therefore no wine has been paired with lunch. Instead we’ve created lovely non-alcoholic daiquiris which, thanks to their delicious taste and the beautiful warm weather, have been a big hit.
