What is the list? Condé Nast Traveler’s annual Gold List identifies the best of the best the gold standard of hotels, resorts, and cruise lines. Nearly 80,000 of the world’s most discerning travelers (a record-setting number) produced a final selection of the very best places in the world, by participating in the annual Readers’ Choice survey. The Tasting Room garners a spot in Eat Out’s Top Ten

Le Quartier Francais is thrilled at the announcement that their world-renowned dinner restaurant, The Tasting Room, came 9th overall in the annual South African Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards 2013. The Tasting Room is currently
ranked 51 on San Pellegrino’s World Best Restaurants.
Held at The Lookout in the V&A Waterfront on Sunday the 10th of November, roughly 500 people attended the gala evening to enjoy delicious food, brush shoulders with the who’s who in the foodie world, and hear the results of these prestigious awards. Margot Janse, Head Chef, and Eleanor Kerwin, F&B Manager attended.
In Margot’s acceptance speech, for which Eat Out called her “gracious“, she said “I am so proud. It’s a great honour to see so many of the chefs who have worked with me gaining their own awards.”
Anonymous judges have been dining in restaurants across the country in order to nominate 20 finalists, from which the Top 10 were chosen. This year, both Bread & Wine – Le Quartier Français’s lunch time restaurant situated on the family Wine Estate, Môreson – and world-renowned dinner restaurant, The Tasting Room, were nominated. The Tasting Room has previously made it onto the Top 10 eleven times in the sixteen years that this award has existed, and Bread & Wine have been in the Top 10 twice. This is the third year that both restaurants have been nominated concurrently. The Tasting Room was also nominated for the Boschendal Style Award 2013.
Abigail Donnelly, Editor for Eat Out, says “Ultimately, however, it’s the food that counts. Taste is the emotional component of a dish, making it the most vital element. The scorecards show which restaurants excel in flavour and not just the fussy stuff. Many of our native ingredients have been celebrated, making them the future of South African food”.

We’re beyond thrilled that both of our restaurants have been nominated once again for The Eat Out Awards. This marks the second time both Bread & Wine and The Tasting Room have appeared on the Top 20 nomination list concurrently – but that’s not all, that year, 2007, both restaurants made it onto the Top 10 Restaurants too! The Tasting Room garnered the number one spot, and Bread & Wine came in at number four! We were extremely proud then and we’re proud now! Head over to Eat Out to see the results from 2007.

Travel & Leisure’s Top Lodges and Resorts in Africa and the Middle East 2013

We’ve been voted by Travel & Leisure as one of the Top Lodges and Resorts in Africa and the Middle East for 2013! Coming in at number 14, it’s a huge honour and we’re very thankful to everyone who gave us the nod! See the results here.

worlds-best-2013-header

Here’s what they had to say about us:

Surrounded by blooming rose and jasmine gardens—as well as stunning Cape Winelands scenery—this Relais & Châteaux property practically begs for thrown-open windows and romantic strolls. Twenty-one luxurious rooms are set in Victorian-style structures surrounding a central courtyard and an oval swimming pool with teak loungers. Top South African chef Margot Janse oversees both on-site restaurants: the dressy Tasting Room with its daily tasting menus and the more casual Common Room tapas restaurant. Kids are well looked after here; before arrival, their rooms are stocked with age-appropriate books, DVDs, and fun bath amenities like kid-size bathrobes and bath capsules that expand into African animal sponges.
Room to Book: Rooms 17 and 19 (Pool Suites) are the best bet for families thanks to the private pools and gardens, two baths each, and loft-style bedrooms with twin beds and stuffed animals upstairs.
Insider Tip: Eating alfresco is a must in this scenic setting, so stop for picnic fixings—like freshly baked bread and fabulous homemade charcuterie—at Bread & Wine, LQF’s sister restaurant set idyllically among vineyards and lemon orchards on Môreson wine farm.

We’re number 53!

The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français ranks 53 in San Pellegrino World’s Top 100 Restaurants
At a prestigious awards ceremony in London last night The Tasting Room moved up the gourmet ladder from 57 to 53 on San Pellegrino World’s Top 100 Restaurants. Only one of two African restaurants on the list (Cape Town’s The Test Kitchen came in at position 61) makes this a remarkable achievement.
No stranger to international recognition this will be Chef Margot Janse’s ninth year on the San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. The incomparable chef has also been crowned Chef of the Year at the 2012 Eat Out Awards, and has made it into the Eat Out Top 10 an unprecedented 11 times. She’s also been a Relais & Châteaux Grand Chef since 2008.
At The Tasting Room – in a break from the habitual – there is no menu. Expect the unexpected with the surprise tasting menu, each course is unveiled with the spirit of true African story-telling—through texture, aroma and nostalgia; and the continent’s timeless ingredients are made new on the plate for utter food theatre. Margot is continuously inspired by the people and produce around her, and this vision shines through as a vibrant tribute.
We’re enormously proud of Margot and the Tasting Room’s dedicated team.
