The Tasting Room excels in the Eat Out Top Ten!
We’re thrilled at the announcement that our world-renowned dinner restaurant, The Tasting Room, came third overall in the 2014 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, and also won the Grolsch Service Excellence Award!
Dubbed the ‘Foodie Oscars’, the glittering gala was held on Sunday 16 November 2014 at Thunder City at the Cape Town International Airport.
“It’s fantastic!” says Executive Chef Margot Janse of the award. “I’m very grateful for the recognition and incredibly proud of my team. I work with amazing chefs, in the most inspiring of settings.”
The annual ceremony and resulting magazine, awards the country’s top restaurants and chefs, and is a celebration of the burgeoning restaurant industry in South Africa.
“The Tasting Room celebrated its tenth anniversary this year,” says Margot. “Plus, Gerald van der Walt [previously of The Greenhouse] has joined our team as Head Chef and together we are rethinking, playing, creating….”
This will be the thirteenth year; The Tasting Room has made it onto the Top 10, in the sixteen years that this award has existed.
“Great front-of-house skills are matched with bold personalities” says Judge, Abigail Donnelly, of the Grolsch Service award and “consistently genius food dazzles and thrills with a magical element of surprise” of The Tasting Room.
Judge Reuben Riffel remarked, “Margot Janse is at the top of her game & is clearly having a lot of fun.”
We are also so elated that our lunch time restaurant, Bread & Wine, was nominated for The Eat Out Top 10 and Head Chef Neil Jewell served up a scrumptious course of his award winning charcuterie for this star studded event.

The Rossouw’s by Diners Club South African Restaurant Guide 2015 was launched yesterday at the Steyn City Golf Club in Johannesburg. 20 restaurants were awarded five-star status—and among them was Bread & Wine!
Anna Trapido, food critic and editor of Rossouw’s by Diners Club South African Restaurant Guide 2015 said this: “Bread and Wine is a glorious, gastronomic gem. Delicious and witty. Eco-epicurean yet never preachy. Old school and yet utterly modern. The food is deceptively simple. Great ancient techniques like the ones on offer at Bread and Wine take years to acquire. Understanding classic combinations and making them feel unique and personal is an art.”
JP Rossouw says ‘the guide that truly ‘tells it like it is’, as reviewers visit every restaurant anonymously and pay for the meal, for ultimate independence and integrity. Achieving five stars in the guide is a real feat – only 20 awards have been given, out of more than 300 restaurants reviewed.”

We are thrilled, proud and honoured that two restaurants of the Le Quartier Français family have been nominated for the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards for 2014!
Both The Tasting Room and Bread & Wine have both been shortlisted for the Top Ten restaurants in South Africa! The award ceremony takes places on 16 November 2014, in Thunder City, Cape Town. Grab tickets here.
That’s not all, Chef Neil Jewell of Bread & Wine is also cooking on the night, alongside David Higgs of Five Hundred, George Jardine of Jordan Restaurant, PJ Vadas formerly of Camphors at Vergelegen, Bertus Basson of Overture, and Vanessa Marx of Dear Me.

The American Express Fine Dining Awards 2014
Last night at The American Express Fine Dining Awards 2014 both The Tasting Room and Bread & Wine came home smiling.
‘In recent years, we have seen a re-definition of fine dining for modern times,’ said Victor Strugo. Strugo is a ‘long-time restaurant critic for the Saturday Star and convenor of the American Express® judging panel since the inception of the awards 16 years ago’.
“Restaurateurs and diners are acknowledging that the cornerstones of excellence can – and indeed should – exist across a wide spectrum of styles, ethnicities and ambiences and not only in “classic” or “formal” establishments.’
The annual awards saw a number of records broken:
• the highest number of awards in a single year – 95 – up from 83 last year
• the highest number of new entrants receiving awards – 17 – in any single year since the inaugural awards of 1998
• 7 restaurants received their 10th Award and were added to the Roll of Honour
• the widest footprint to date: the awards now cover 7 of South Africa’s 9 provinces
